Picnic benching

why picnic benches matter more than you think at events

at food festivals and outdoor events across Cornwall and the South West, we’ve seen first-hand how something as simple as seating can quietly make a big difference. Not just to the experience for punters, but to food traders and bar sales too.

standing eats vs sitting stays

we’ve all been there. you grab a wrap, pick up a pint, look around… and realise there’s nowhere to site. So you stand awkwardly, eat quickly, finish your drink and move on.

That usually means:

  • One food purchase

  • One drink

  • Minimal lingering

But give people a place to sit and the behaviour changes completely.

When people can sit down, they slow down. The enjoy their food properly, chat with friends, watch what’s going on around them and more often than not, they head back for another drink or a sweet treat. That extra dwell time directly benefits nearby traders and bars.

What we see on site

Across food festivals and outdoor events, the pattern is pretty consistent

  • more seating keeps people in the area longer

  • Longer stays lead to higher food spend

  • Bars see repeat visit rather than one and done purchases

Seating also makes events more inclusive. Families, older guests and anyone who needs a breather is far more likely to buy food and drinks if they know there’s somewhere comfortable to sit

how benches improve layout, flow & overall experience

seating naturally creates social areas where people can settle, eat drink and relax without blocking walkway or crowding food stands and bars. Reducing congestion, easing pressure on queues and encouraging people to spread out more evenly across site.

from an organisers point of view, this creates a smoother flow, fewer pinch points and a calmer if not welcoming atmosphere throughout the event.

picnic benches are often seen as a nice extra, but in reality they’re part of event infrastructure. They support traders, boost bar sales, improve access and quietly raise the overall quality of the event experience… not bad for a bit of timber and a few bolts!!

well placed picnic benches don’t just help food and bar sales, they help the whole site work better.
