Is Event Site Crew Work for You?
when you attend an event you see the finished product - a buzzing festival, a packed food market or thousands dancing at a music concert. What you don’t see are long hours and hard work and the dedicated crew behind the scenes, making sure the site is ready to welcome guests.
Crew are the first to arrive and often the last to leave. From the moment they step onto an empty field, they’re transforming a blank canvas into a fully functioning event site. Whether it’s installing event infrastructure, setting up equipment or loading and unloading vehicles, no two days are the same.
If you’re someone who enjoys working outdoors, staying active and being part of a team, event site crew work could be the perfect fit.
What Does a Crew Member Do?
Every site is different, this means working on different sites with different people and adapting constantly to changing environments.
What a typical day can include and what a typical day with The Events Depot includes:
Installing fencing and barriers.
Delivering and setting up picnic benches, deck chairs and event furniture.
Installing cable protection and safety equipment.
De-rigging and clearing sites once event has finished.
Loading and unloading vehicles.
Having a giggle with the team whilst enjoying a well deserved iced coffee!
One week you could be delivering picnic benches to a food festival on the Cornish coast and the next you could be helping build infrastructure at a Dog festival!
What skills do you need?
The good news. You don’t need years of experience to get started. Unlike many job adverts that seem to ask for three years’ experience for an entry-level role, event site crew work is all about attitude.
If you’re eager to learn, willing to get stuck in and ready to work as part of a team, you’ll already have the qualities that matter most. We can teach you practical skills - the willingness to work hard, support your team mates and get the job done is what really counts.
Some of the most important qualities include:
A positive attitude
Reliability and good time keeping
A willingness to work hard
The ability to work well in a team
Problem solving skills
A full UK driving licence is always a bonus, and if you hold a telehandler licence, you’ll have an even greater advantage when applying for event crew roles. These qualifications can open up more opportunities and help you stand out from other applicants.
That said, they’re by no means essential. There are plenty of opportunities to get started in the industry.
It’s Not Your Typical 9-to-5
Event work can involve early mornings, late nights and weekend shifts.
Depending if you go through an agency or go freelance like our own crew you are able to accept or decline the days you want to work. But bear in mind that an event will typically want you for the whole duration of the build and break which could be a matter of days, weeks or months. But between events, crew are travelling the world, catching up with friends and family or relaxing and enjoying their time off before they are back on site.
You will often find yourself working in locations you have never thought you would visit. And will find yourself travelling the country or may even find yourself in a new country.
